“We have a duty
In this classification system, the concept of common interests functions as a standardized benchmark, enabling Aristotle to evaluate various political bodies. Other ancient thinkers also held influential views regarding common interests; the perspective of the Roman writer and statesman Cicero (106–43 B.C.), in particular, proved highly influential. In his legal writings, he asserts that the interests of the nation constitute the nation’s supreme law. Cicero refers to this common benefit as *salus populi*—a phrase that translates literally as “the safety of the people,” though it is more broadly understood by the general public as signifying “happiness” and “well-being.” Cicero further maintained that this concept lay at the heart of “republican theory,” defining the *res publica* as “the project of the people.” He also noted that “people” does not signify just any form of association, but rather “people who have accepted justice and established cooperation for the sake of common interests.” Thus, Cicero introduced a specific concept of common interests to distinguish the republic (or a state in a more general sense) from other human groups. He insisted that individuals would not merely seek to take advantage of one another, but were also bound together by an agreement regarding the principle of justice that governs their relations. Thomas Aquinas (1225–1274) developed the most influential account of common interests within the Christian tradition, drawing upon the works of Aristotle and Cicero. Aquinas argued that the pursuit of egoistic individualism and distorted, self-absorbed interests could lead to political instability and governance crises. “Autocratic politics are not directed toward the *bonum commune* (common good), but rather toward the benefit of the rulers.” Aquinas emphasized a shared understanding of the concept of justice and the interests inherent in the political sphere. However, Aquinas was concerned not only with the prosperity of a particular political society but also with humanity as a whole, viewed as part of a universal moral order. Yet, unlike the theorists of ancient Greece and Rome, he identified common interests with the principles and divine order established by God. Thus, Thomas Aquinas maintained that Christians could attain knowledge of the common good through divine revelation. In his own words: “The good within the universe is understood through the divine principle of perfection and order—the Creator and Ruler of all things.” This perspective is also evident in Aristotle’s ethical and political works. Subsequently, I explained how Thomas Aquinas addressed this subject within his philosophical and theological framework. Aristotle had raised the issue of common interests being conflated with the private interests of the powerful—rather than serving the interests of the individual citizen. This describes the system of occupation under which you currently live: through a co-opted mass media, you are made to fight perpetual wars that do not serve the interests of your own people. Aquinas identified this very same problem within the same context. Aquinas’s contribution to this debate lay in his argument that common political interests constitute a specific category of shared goods, and that these are not the only common interests that must be taken into consideration.
