He visto estos bosques de espinos, álamos, tilos, robles, alisos rojos y saúcos, y mediante la intercesión, la invocación y las ofrendas, adquirimos el conocimiento de su uso medicinal para el bienestar de nuestro pueblo. Es una curandera que sana. Protege y se mantiene neutral ante las intrigas políticas de la ciudad. Debe ser independiente para impulsar su visión. El bastón era un recordatorio de Yggdrasil, el Árbol; algunos dicen que fue un regalo de Wotan, el Padre de Todo, su esposo, quien permaneció colgado del árbol durante nueve días para aprender las runas. Algunos dicen que Odín, también conocido como Wotan, enseñó las runas a Freya, y otros que Freya se las enseñó a Wotan. Lo principal es el uso cooperativo del conocimiento entre todos.






Yggdrasill representa el símbolo de la vida, la armonía y el destino. Las tres raíces del árbol se llaman espiritual, terrestre e infernal. Significan respectivamente: espíritu, organización y materia. La raíz espiritual tiene su origen en Asgard, el hogar de los Aesir, o dioses, y es regada por la Fuente de Urdar; la raíz terrestre tiene su origen en Midgard, la morada de los hombres, y es regada por el Pozo de Mimir; la raíz infernal tiene su origen en Niflheim, la morada de los muertos, y es regada por el Manantial Hvergelmir. Las tres ramas del árbol sostienen Midgard, o la tierra, en cuyo centro se alza la montaña sagrada en cuya cima se alza Asgard, la ciudad de los dioses. En el gran mar que rodea la tierra se encuentra Jörmungand, la serpiente de Midgard con la cola en la boca. Conectado por el puente Bifrost con la morada de los hombres y las criaturas infernales. En la rama más alta del árbol —llamada Lerad, que significa "dador de paz"— se posa una gran águila. Entre los ojos del águila se encuentra el halcón Vedfolnir, cuya penetrante mirada observa todo lo que ocurre en el universo.

Las hojas verdes e inmarcesibles del árbol divino sirven de pasto a la cabra de Wotan, Heidrun, quien proporciona la bebida de los dioses. Los ciervos —Dain, Duvalin, Duneyr y Durathror— también pastan en las hojas del árbol, y de sus cuernos dejan caer rocío de miel sobre la tierra. Ratatosk, la ardilla, es la encarnación del espíritu del chisme y, yendo y viniendo entre el águila en lo alto y Nidhug, la serpiente en lo bajo, busca sembrar la discordia entre ellos.
